Young patients from the Thalassemia Centre enjoyed a day of activities on Sunday, courtesy of Empower, the region’s largest district cooling provider, in collaboration with Dubai Healthcare City and Al Jalila Foundation.
These activities, including an art competition and performances, are part of Empower’s sixth annual blood donation campaign to benefit children suffering from thalassemia, a genetic disorder that affects red blood cells.
Held annually, Empower’s Blood Donation campaign is organised by volunteers from within the company. Members of the public were also invited to donate blood, with these donations set to benefit children from the Thalassemia Centre.
“This blood donation campaign reiterates our firm commitment to society. People with thalassemia depend upon routine blood transfusions, so hosting an event that benefits young thalassemia patients is a small, but significant way to contribute to their future,” said Ahmad Bin Shafar, Chief Executive Officer of Empower.
People with thalassemia typically have lower haemoglobin levels and can sometimes develop bone deformities or suffer from cardiovascular illnesses.
“Educating the wider community about thalassemia is a priority. Hosting an event where people can not only donate blood, but interact with thalassemia patients is a good way to start conversations about this disorder and raise awareness,” said Dr Abdulkareem Sultan Alolama, Chief Executive Officer, Al Jalila Foundation.
“Our primary focus is treating people,” said Marwan Abedin, Chief Executive Officer, Dubai Healthcare City. “Globally, there is a serious shortage of voluntary blood donations. Events like these not only aide people who depend on blood donors, but also educate people about the necessity to volunteer.”
