Marafeq Qatar delegation visits Empower to study use of treated water in district cooling production

January 22nd, 2013

Ahmed Bin Shafar: “The Gulf is a strong player in producing District Cooling”

Emirates Central Cooling Corporation (Empower), the largest district cooling service provider in the region, welcomed a delegation from Marafeq Qatar, a leading utility services company based in Doha.

The visit was aimed at familiarising the Qatari delegation with Empower’s practices in using treated water in district cooling. Both parties agreed that with the huge construction projects taking place in Qatar, district cooling will have a bigger role to play, which underscores the importance of learning from Dubai successful experience in district cooling.

The delegation has been briefed during a tour of the Empower plant in Dubai Healthcare City.

Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower, welcoming the delegation said that district cooling has high growth potential in the Gulf which is becoming a major player in the production of district cooling, with a large percentage of the global production being supplied in the Gulf in general and UAE in particular.

The Marafeq Qatar delegation expressed interest in the environmental solutions implemented in providing district cooling by Empower. Bin Shafar briefed them on the growth of Empower which in just 10 years has been propelled to the global stage. This position, according to Bin Shafar, has given Empower an edge to drive the sector in the Middle East in record time.

The delegation was briefed about the Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) system adopted by Empower to provide district cooling services. The DHCC plant visited by the delegation has a capacity to deliver 1000 m3/day of pure water based on Reverse Osmosis technology. Empower team explained the technique of purifying water to minimize water wastage.

According to Empower, the purpose of district cooling is to save energy thus using sewage or recycled water in producing district cooling represents a huge step in water conservation.

District cooling companies in the Middle East, led by Empower, are using global practices to serve their customers. The challenge for Middle East companies is greater as cooling services in this part of the world are required throughout the year, unlike western countries where their use is seasonal.

Marafeq Qatar, owned by Qatari Diar Company, is the leading company in developing and building infrastructures in the Middle East. The company provides comprehensive package of utility management included master planning, infrastructure designing and construction supervision.
