HE Bin Shafar: "UAE gives high importance to efforts to develop mechanisms and routes to reduce carbon emissions and boost sustainability."
Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world’s largest district cooling services provider, was recognised for developing a new Methodology (AM0117) that aims to reduce carbon emissions through the use of district cooling systems. The methodology has been approved by the CDM-EB (Clean Development Mechanism – Executive Board) of the UNFCCC at its 92nd meeting in Marrakesh recently.
The felicitation ceremony was held yesterday (14th November 2016) during a gala dinner on the sidelines of the 7th international district cooling conference 2016, which was held from November 13 to 15, 2016, under the patronage of HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy; and attended by HE Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower and a galaxy of senior officials from Dubai Carbon Centre and conference participants.
Speaking about the honor, HE Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower: "We are proud to be honored by the Dubai Carbon Centre, which is a key partner in the innovative methodology which was launched specifically in line with our relentless efforts to reduce carbon emissions, especially at a time when countries around the world are realising the importance of combating global warming. We are very proud as UAE to be on the top list of countries that are committed to conserve the earth's natural resources. This methodology will soon bear fruit at the local, regional and global level, especially after its adoption for the first time by the the CDM-EB (Clean Development Mechanism – Executive Board) of the UNFCCC, which enable its application by organisations, companies and plants all over the world."
The felicitation ceremony was held at the conclusion of the first day of the 7th International District Cooling Conference 2016, on Tuesday 15 November 2016, under the theme ‘districtCOOLING: A Climate Solution’. The first day and honoring ceremony saw the participation of officials, decision makers from the public and private sectors from different parts of the world which represented international companies operating in the fields of energy as well as engineers, contractors, consultants and suppliers.
"Stemming from our leadership position as the largest district cooling company in the world, it is not surprising that Empower made this global milestone achievement and in line with the directives of the leadership of HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE, and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai,” added HE Bin Shafar.
"This special honor demonstrates our advancement in the field of district cooling, energy consumption, and environment preservation, within the directives of the country's wise leadership, which has given great importance to support all efforts to develop mechanisms and ways to decrease carbon emissions, develop sustainable development solutions, and reduce energy consumption,” added Bin Shafar.
Bin Shafar emphazised that the methodology is not the result of Empower's efforts alone, but is part of an integrative and hard work of all organisations in the UAE, particularly the ones concerned with energy and environmental affairs, and that the methodology is a worldwide milestone at the forefront of efforts to transform Dubai into a green city to be free of carbon, in line with UAE Vision 2021.
I would like to thank the Dubai Carbon Centre for its strong participation in the launch of the methodology, as well to Empower's team, which has spared no effort in completing the new methodology's system that will be in turn a new system for raising operation efficiency in the field of district cooling through the latest technological methods, approved by the United Nations, that will has positive results in the whole world," concluded Bin Shafar.
