His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister for Finance and industry, and President of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), unveiled Empower's 'Al Quoz District Cooling plant', at the Water, Energy Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2008) in Dubai.
The district cooling plant will provide Al Quoz residential buildings with 35,000 refrigeration tonnes (RT) of district cooling. The integrated residential community developed by master developer Dubai Properties, covers 707,887 square metre area comprising office buildings, warehouses, central kitchen, laundry, and sports facilities.
A scale model of the Al Quoz district cooling plant is being showcased at WETEX 2008, an important regional resourcing platform for national and international companies, which runs until 15 March at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The construction of the 70 metre x 48 metre facility is scheduled for completion by June 2009.
Speaking at the three-day exhibition, Ahmed Bin Shafar, CEO, Empower, heralded the move as an important step in the company's continued commitment to supplying state-of-the-art, energy-efficient district cooling services.
Bin Shafar said: 'Empower is committed to serve Dubai and the region with environment friendly solutions that will ease the burden on the country's infrastructure. The move is in line with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to use the most energy efficient technologies.
'Major businesses in Dubai and the region have realised that district cooling brings added value and benefits like reduction in capital and operating costs. Several organizations in the private and government sectors are keen to employ these solutions and we believe the Al Quoz district cooling plant will significantly help us to fulfill Dubai Properties' requirements.'
Empower currently handles projects for several prominent clusters in Dubai, including the dynamic new financial district - Dubai International Finance Centre, as well as the Dubai Healthcare City, City of Arabia and the Business Bay.
Empower is a joint venture between Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.
