Emirates Central Cooling Corporation (Empower), the largest district cooling service provider in the region, said that the total square footage committed to district cooling provided by the company reached 102,398,000, covering 367 buildings in 2008.
According to the company, residential units in Dubai are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of using district cooling system as an alternative to the conventional AC systems, leading to energy saving and environment conservation, as well as lower operations and maintenance costs. This is in sharp contrast to relatively less awareness of its importance in other parts of the Middle East.
Empower, a joint venture between TECOM Investments and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has bagged the golden award at the International District Energy Association's (IDEA) 100th Annual Conference held in Virginia, for the total square footage committed to district cooling and a bronze award for the total number of buildings committed to the system. The awards were won against competition from reputed global companies.
Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower, chaired the delegation to the event, along with Ramadurai Ramesh – Director of Finance, Tariq Al Yasi – Director Operations & Maintenance
and Moustapha Assayed – Senior Engineering Manager.
Bin Shafar said: “This is the third time in a row that we won a golden award at this international event. It clearly reflects our success in adopting world class district cooling infrastructure to implement this system that is considered an ideal economic and environmental solution for residential and commercial units, offices and hotels. The operational saving percentage in a residential unit compared with conventional AC technologies ranges between 40 and 45 per cent”.
Bin Shafar added: “We top the list of companies providing district cooling service in the region. We adopt a clear strategy to preserve environment through aggressively disseminating this technology and conducting campaigns to highlight its strategic value in the short and long run to the people and the society in general”.
IDEA is a non-profit trade association that annually hosts a conference and trade show to showcase latest technologies and equipment in the district energy industry. The annual event give attendees - including energy professionals, consultancies, government agencies and system developers - the opportunity to learn more about district cooling from a global perspective and meet with a variety of vendors and suppliers.
Bin Shafar added: “We are providing district cooling service to a wide array of projects in Dubai, including Dubai International Financial Center, Dubai Healthcare City, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Culture City, Business Bay and City Of Arabia. We will shortly announce our new wins.”
